DWI Hit Parade!

Salisbury -  Deputy First Class Matt Minton of the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office was recently recognized by MADD for his educational outreach and enforcement initiatives that have identified and removed drunk and drugged drivers from Talbot roadways.  Proactive patrol methods, proven experience, and completion of the SHA sponsored  “DUI College” were the foundation for Dfc. Minton’s recognition and achievement.  At this regional event, Dfc. Minton was honored by MADD’s Executive State Director Caroline Cash; with her noting that his efforts have reduced alcohol related crashes and have saved lives.  “Dfc. Minton is being honored among his peers for his persistence and ability to detect and arrest the drunk drivers that plague our roadways and who kill our friends and family” said Cash.  Other officers from across the Eastern Shore were also recognized at MADD’s annual ceremony in Salisbury.

Hamilton Township Deputy Mayor Charles Cain was arrested early Saturday and charged  with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, among other offenses, Police Lt. Edward Barr said.   MORE

More than 350 motorists are starting 2011 with a sobering reminder after being arrested during a statewide drunk driving crackdown over the holidays.  
Law enforcement officers from more than 200 agencies conducted stepped up enforcement aimed at curtailing drunk driving during the Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. crackdown Dec. 16-Jan. 2. The Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) coordinated the effort which was funded with federal highway safety grants in 35 counties. This resulted in 9,462 traffic stops and more than 6,600 citations or arrests, including 121 for other alcohol- and drug-related charges such as open intoxicants and underage drinking.   MORE

 The following report is from the Borough of Fanwood, New Jersey Police Department

On 01/15/2011 @ 2:27 AM Officer made a M.V. stop at Second St. & LaGrande Ave. for a M.V. violation. Upon speaking with the driver the Officer could detect an odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the driver. Officer asked the driver to step out of the vehicle for a sobriety test, which the driver was unable to do. Driver was arrested, processed and released to a responsible party. Defendant is a Kyle Harvin 34 yrs. old male from Westfield.

On 01/15/2011 @ 6:59 AM Officer was responding to a motor vehicle accident @ Midway Ave. & North Ave. Upon Officers arrival he located both parties and while speaking with the one he could detect a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from this person. Driver was asked to perform sobriety test which she was unable to do. Driver was arrested, processed and released to a responsible party. Defendant is a Catherine Rucinski 22 yrs. old female from Berkeley Heights

According to the MADD website, Texas is the fifth highest-ranking state in the nation in the number of DWIs reported and is home to 124,662 people who committed three or more DWIs in the past year. Logan said the new legislation does not apply to DWI offenders who have injured or killed anyone.
“I’ve seen more innocent people die from DWI collisions than any other way,” said UT Police Department Chief Robert Dahlstrom. “I’ve seen it happen over and over. [DWIs] will only not be a significant issue when there are no more DWIs on the road.”  MORE
