Vermont: Pair of Pot Heads in Pickle for Puffing at Pal’s Police DUI arrest

Two drunk passengers in a car stopped by police were caught smoking pot — less than 20 ft. from Vermont State Troopers — while waiting for a sober driver to pick them up, Vermont State Police said. One of those passengers, Kris Richards, 30, of St. Albans, told Troopers that it was probably a “dumb idea” to be smoking marijuana while at a DUI traffic stop, according to police.  ….MORE

Utah: Highway Patrol runs nearly 20% arrest rate for vehicle stops in recent DUI enforcement

The following report from the Utah Highway Patrol:
The week ending Feb. 17, 2011, the DUI Squad accomplished the following:
Vehicle Stops: 124
DUI Arrests: 23
Drug Arrests: 11
Not a Drop Arrests: 4
Open Containers: 2
Alcohol Restricted: 2
Alcohol Revoked: 1
10-80 (High speed chase) /Felony Arrest: 1 (Trp. Z. Randall)
The DUI Squad also assisted Section 2 troopers and the Alcohol Enforcement Team during the “Dew Tour”, an outdoor concert. The combined enforcement efforts resulted in 12 DUI arrests and 4 vehicle impounds for street racing.
On February 12, 2011, troopers from the DUI squad were also involved in a vehicle pursuit at approximately 0130 hours, following the outdoor concert.
A trooper initiated the pursuit when a small blue passenger car fled from an attempted traffic stop in Ogden. The pursuit was brought to an end when the trooper pitted the vehicle near Adams and 24th Street. The intoxicated female driver and male passenger were both apprehended.

Tennessee: Trooper honored for nabbing kidnapper; top ten troopers rack up scores of DUI arrests

Trooper Dwayne Stanford
joined the Department of Safety and Homeland Security in 2002 as a Communications Dispatcher and was later commissioned as a State Trooper in 2007. His initial assignment was as a Road Trooper in Fayette County until being transferred to Henderson County in the Jackson District in 2008. Trooper Stanford earned the Trooper of the Year honor after locating a juvenile who was kidnapped out of Maryland on February 13, 2010. Trooper Stanford received an AMBER Alert notification, began an immediate search for the suspect’s vehicle and located said subject within 20 minutes. He arrested the suspect without incident and preserved potential evidence in the case. Trooper Stanford was awarded House Joint Resolution No. 1313 by the state of Tennessee House of Representatives and the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation for his enforcement efforts. He was also recognized for the top 10 Troopers in DUI Enforcement with 30 arrests.

Indiana: Judge and prosecutors come up with deal to give relief to first offenders DUI who complete 6 months of clean breathing

SOUTH BEND — A court program that allows certain drunken-driving offenders to avoid a DUI conviction has been modified to address legal concerns raised by a local judge.
The program allows first-time offenders who qualify to use an ignition interlock device in their car for six months to keep the DUI conviction off their records. They must also attend drug and alcohol classes, submit to drug tests and other requirements. The program is overseen by the St. Joseph County prosecutor’s office and has been used by about 150 people in the last five years.

Florida: Deputy rear-ended by man charged with DUI

Pinellas County, Florida (Feb. 28, 2011) — According to police  investigators, on Saturday Feb. 26, 2011 at about 1:40 am, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputy Karl Gwynne was northbound in the center lane of US19 stopped at a red light at Tampa Road, when he was rear ended by a 1996 Toyota Avalon driven by 45 year-old Herbert Hugh Andrew McClellan III.
Police report that Deputy Gwynne complained of neck injuries, but refused treatment.
McClellan was extricated from the vehicle and was transported to Mease Countryside for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Following release from the hospital, McClellan was transported to Central Breath Testing for Standardized Field Sobriety Test and a breath test. Investigators say his Blood Alcohol Level was .183.
Deputies also located open beer cans, a small amount marijuana, and a prescription medication in the suspect’s vehicle.
Police say that Deputy Gwynne’s cruiser sustained moderate damage. McClellan’s vehicle sustained major damage.  Deputy Gwynne is a 6-year veteran of the department.
McClellan was arrested for the careless driving, no insurance, seatbelt violation, open container and an administrative citation for possession of a controlled substance, as well as DUI, according to police press releases and jail records, and transported to the Pinellas County Jail.

SOUTH PASADENA — A St. Petersburg man suspected of driving drunk was arrested on additional charges after he kicked a Pinellas County deputy’s window off its track and urinated in the deputy’s cruiser Sunday morning, authorities said.   Bradley A. Yager, 22, of 4127 Eighth Ave. N was charged with driving under the influence, criminal mischief, resisting an officer, and lewd and lascivious behavior.   …..MORE
