District of Columbia: The latest chapter of the banana republic of DC involves DWI cases dismissed by the dozen due to the police being so inept that they haven’t tested the breathalyzers in ten years

by admin ·

From MyFox5dc.COM
WASHINGTON – The Attorney General’s Office in the District is confirming it has been dismissing DWI cases, in part because they are missing evidence.
FOX 5 has been able to document 23 cases in the last week alone.
The police union is calling for an investigation.
Up until now, the D.C. Attorney General’s Office has been unwilling to disclose on the record how they are disposing of DWI cases.
It is a highly controversial issue after a whistleblower claimed last year the breathalyzers used by D.C. Police had not been tested for accuracy, perhaps as far back as 2000.
Just this week, D.C. Police abandoned the use of breathalyzers and are now only taking urine samples as a way to prove the blood alcohol content of a suspected drunk driver. It was a decision made when D.C. Police were told the Attorney General’s Office would not use the results in court…..MORE

Kentucky: State police report 2011 traffic deaths mostly due to boozing and failing to buckle up

by admin ·

(Frankfort, Ky.) — The Kentucky State Police report that preliminary statistics* indicate that eleven people died in eleven separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, Jan. 31, through Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011.
Ten of the crashes involved motor vehicles and six of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Allen, Bath, Fayette, Floyd, Jefferson, Knox, Nelson, Russell, Simpson and Union counties. The crash in Floyd County involved the suspected use of alcohol.
One pedestrian involved crash occurred in Union County.
Through Feb. 6, preliminary statistics* indicate that forty-nine people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2011. This is eighteen less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2010. There were forty-three motor vehicle fatalities and twenty-seven of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Six of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Six crashes involved pedestrians. A total of eight fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
