A March 17 preliminary hearing date was set Tuesday for a Palm Springs man charged with second-degree murder in the death of his passenger in a motorcycle crash that occurred while he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

A convicted drunken driver showed up drunk to serve his sentence at Gaston County Jail, according to an order for arrest.  Gary Lewis Friday, 47, of Bessemer City received a jail sentence to be served on weekends after being found guilty Jan. 5 of driving while impaired, according to court records.   ….MORE

— A state appeals court panel today upheld a drunken driving conviction that attorney George Korpita, a former municipal court judge for multiple towns in Morris County, received for driving under the influence in Sparta in 2008.   Korpita, now 51, was stopped on Feb. 16, 2008, after leaving a restaurant in Sparta, and was charged with DWI, refusing to submit to the Alcotest, and failure to keep right.   This motor vehicle stop occurred about a week before Korpita was due to be sentenced in state Superior Court, Morristown, on charges of threatening a public servant — a police officer — and driving while intoxicated in Roxbury in November 2007.  ….MORE
