HARTFORD — A state appellate panel says a truck driver who lost his job because of a drunk driving arrest can get unemployment compensation.
Tuxis Ohr’s Fuel Inc. appealed a Superior Court judge’s ruling that entitled Gerald T. Aleksiewicz to collect unemployment insurance. The Meriden company discharged Aleksiewicz after his commercial driver’s license was suspended for one year following his arrest for DWI four years ago.
Aleksiewicz was driving his own car when he was in a collision in Meriden while off duty. The results of a breath test found his blood-alcohol content was 0.216 percent, nearly three times the legal limit.….MORE

BRIDGEVIEW — A Lockport police officer was sentenced to six years in prison Monday for a December 2009 DUI crash that killed a 29-year-old man on Interstate 55.Eddie Stapinski had bloodshot eyes, reeked of alcohol and spoke with slurred speech after crashing into Mike Wong of Chicago on Dec. 20, 2009, prosecutors said. His car was going 80 mph when it struck and killed Wong, they said Dec. 22, when he was ordered held on $750,000 bond.  …..MORE

Colorado: WOMAN CHARGED WITH CHILD ABUSE IN DUI CRASH

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey has formally charged a 24-year-old woman accused of driving drunk and causing a crash that seriously injured a six-year-old girl.
Valencia Lucero (dob: 10-18-86) is charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury (F3), vehicular assault while driving under the influence (F4) and driving under the influence 2nd offense (M). The charges allege that just after midnight on March 31, 2011, Lucero, who was driving with two juveniles in the vehicle, crashed into two parked cars in the 4500 block of Clay Street. The charges further allege that Lucero was drunk at the time, and attempted to flee the scene on foot. She was taken into custody after being located by a Denver Police K9 team.
One of the juvenile passengers, a six-year-old girl, was taken to a local hospital to be treated for serious bodily injury.
Lucero remains in custody; bond is set at $25,000. She is scheduled to appear in Denver County Courtroom 2100 on April 7, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. to be formally advised of the charges against her.

    North Carolina: murder charges added to DWI in double fatal in Greensboro

    GREENSBORO — New charges — including two counts of second-degree murder — have been filed against an Archdale man charged with causing a wreck March 25 that killed two people.
    Ian Michael Smith, 20, was originally charged with driving while impaired and driving after consuming alcohol while under the age of 21 in connection with the 2:10 a.m. wreck at West Market and Aycock streets.
    Police said Smith was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of West Market Street at an unknown high speed. He crashed his 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse into a Chevrolet S-10 pickup at Aycock Street, killing its driver, Marcial Aragon Colmillo of Greensboro and passenger, Juan Carlos Cortes.  ….MORE

    DENVER — A trial has been set for June in the case of a United Express pilot accused of flying while drunk.
    The U.S. attorney’s office says 32-year-old Aaron Jason Cope appeared Monday in federal court in Denver to be advised of the charge against him.     Kentucky: Louisville police sergeant runs red light, charged with DUI; put on light duty (desk jockey) with pay

    LOUISVILLE, KY  – A Louisville Metro Police traffic officer is in trouble after being accused of driving drunk. A police report that says Sgt. Jeff Wheeler was arrested early April 3.
    According to LMPD, Wheeler was off-duty and in his own car when he almost hit some parked cars on Peabody Lane in the Bashford Manor area. The report says an officer tried to stop Wheeler at Bardstown Road and Goldsmith Lane, but he kept going and drove right through a red light.
    “It’s not an acceptable behavior,” said Lt. Col. Vince Robison, a LMPD deputy chief. “It happens, but it’s not something we condone.”  ….MORE

    Texas: Judge Bob Carroll gets it right — tosses 5-time DWI driver in prison for 32 years!

    On Friday, 40th District Court Judge Bob Carroll sentenced a five-time DWI offender to 32 years in prison.
      Jose Isabel Lopez, Jr., 34, of Arlington, was convicted earlier in the day of felony DWI by a jury and the same jury assessed the sentence. Lopez has four prior convictions from Tarrant, Dallas and Ellis counties, as well as a prior conviction for unauthorized use of a vehicle from Tarrant County.
    On Aug. 2, 2009, Lopez was arrested by an Ellis County Sheriff’s Deputy after Lopez ran a stop sign in a black Ford Explorer. Before arresting him, the deputy smelled alcohol on Lopez, observed beer in his vehicle, and conducted field sobriety tests. After the arrest, the deputy located a small amount of cocaine in the vehicle. Lopez refused to submit to a breath test at the Ellis County jail.    …..MORE
