Maryland: prosecutor wants to know: Who threw the parties? Who provided the alcohol?

by admin ·

Coffay was previously charged with speeding but plea deal lowered the fine;
also failed to lower his speed to avoid a crash in early morning wreck last year

Kevin Brendan Coffay, 20, of Rockville, Md., was charged with failing to return immediately to the scene of a crash involving bodily injury, was released on bond posted by his mother, Ellen Sue Coffay, of Cutlass Drive in Rockville, Md.
Coffay has two prior charges on his record in addition to charges placed and pending involving the crash on May 15, 2011 at 3:11 am, according to Maryland court records and police reports. Coffay was operating a 2007 Toyota Corolla on Laytonsville Road in Olney when he wrecked, killing 3 of his four passengers.   Coffay fled the scene and police used K-9 dogs to track him down.
Montgomery County Police have placed charges of failing to render aid and assistance to an injured person, failing to stop after fatally injuring a person and fleeing from police.  A trial date is set for July 12, 2011.
Rockville attorney Michael McAuliffe is representing Coffay.
On Nov. 26, 2008 Coffay was cited for driving at 83 mph in a 55 mph speed zone on I270 at HOV SKY Ramp and the charge was reduced to 64 mph in a 55 zone with a fine assessed of $67.50 and court costs.
On July 1, 2010 at 3:30 am, he was ticketed by Montgomery County Police Officer D. Berkheimer for failing to control his speed to avoid a collision and he pled guilty resulting in a $130 fine.

Prosecutor Says Coffay was boozing it up prior to killing his friends

Killer Coffay
Coffay’s attorney says Coffay’s father is suffering from Alzheimers and his mother has cancer….so he is depressed
and the way to handle that is by going out to booze parties and celebrate his misery by killing three friends…only in
Montgomery County, Maryland would this be an excuse…

Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said Kevin Coffay, the driver in the crash which killed three young friends in Olney, had attended two parties prior to the crash and had been drinking.
Prosecutors are actively looking for information and trying to determine who hosted the parties Saturday night.
They’re interested in who provided the alcohol and whether any parents were aware of the parties. Any adults who provided alcohol could face charges.
In charging documents, a police officer claims Coffay, 20, had a “strong odor of alcoholic beverage” at the time of his arrest.  …..MORE
Coffay is a flight risk and should not have had bail…he already fled once!
Is this America’s dumbest Judge!

South Carolina: The message Pastor Billy Dean Randall would want delivered

by admin ·

To the Editor:
I googled some stories concerning my former pastor, neighbor, and friend Pastor Billy Dean Randall who was killed by a drunk USC coed who ran a red light and hit Pastor Randall.  The State News did a good article and you attached that story which I appreciate.
 Please let me explain, Pastor Randall, as the family declared would be the FIRST to forgive the girl, the family forgave her, though she will face the court for her actions. Pastor Randall would want to know that this girl was given the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and that she would receive Christ Jesus as her Saviour.
The message that Pastor Randall would want to give concerning his death:  He would want the love of Christ and the forgiveness of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ to be given. Yes, he would tell about the seriousness of sin and what it cost God to pay for our sins;
Ro 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Ro 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
 Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Ac 16:25  And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
Ac 16:26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.
 Ac 16:27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
Ac 16:28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
 Ac 16:29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
 Ac 16:30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
 Ac 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
Ac 16:32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
Ac 16:33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. Ac 16:34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
While we as Christians can forgive by God’s amazing grace, there are penalties for DUI/DWI and especially when it results in killing or injury to someone.
The family during the bond hearing told the girl and the court that the family forgave her, but she would face the judgment for her actions, and she will.  Certainly our prayers are that the girl will hear the gospel, repent of her sins, and receive the Lord, who can  save her and give her a new heart.
 I will personally warn as many people as I can, as to what life changing damage they can cause by just drinking, and even worse if they drink and drive.
If you give any message, continue to tell what the sin of drunkenness can cause, but not only the sin of drunkenness, but all sin. Our sin cost the life of Jesus Christ, but Jesus willingly gave his life for us, no man took it, he laid it down willingly for you and me, and even this young girl, though she may not even realize it yet.
I wish that you could have known Pastor Randall.  He would have befriended you, given you the gospel of Jesus Christ, and left you with a gospel tract.
Sincerely,
Jim Newman

Virginia: police chief that was nailed for DUI, repents, considers bid for office

by admin ·

From The Washington Post
“The easier thing to do is hide somewhere for a couple of years,” said Baker, 60. “The better way out is to face the circumstances head-on and be prepared to do the right thing, not be afraid to share my lessons with others.”
Three days after leaving jail in August 2009, Baker filmed a public service announcement titled “Even a Police Chief Can Get Nailed Drunk Driving.” He has since spoken at schools, the Alexandria jail and police roll calls. Unexpectedly, he said, people told him his story moved them.
“I was at once scared to death, then thrilled beyond description,” Baker said.
Baker, who spent 40 years in public service, found himself wondering whether he should try it again: “I was still looking for opportunities to
serve.” ….MORE
