Virginia: sex hookup with drunk driver at the wheel triggers lawsuit after crash with cab

Navigating I-495 near the Telegraph Road, an area congested with cars and construction, is hard enough without distractions.
But the plaintiff ’s attorney in a civil case set for trial next week in Fairfax County alleges that a man having sex while driving drunk is to blame for slamming into a cab last May on the Beltway.
The cab driver’s attorney claims in court filings that a Woodbridge man, while driving home from a birthday party in Baltimore with a male and female passenger, crashed his car into the cab at a high rate of speed while engaged in an intimate moment with the women. ….MORE

California: GOP lawmaker says he is sorry he was driving drunk; was busted by CHP officer after budget passed

— A state assemblyman arrested for alleged drunken driving not long after leaving the Legislature’s budget passage vote Wednesday night issued a statement Thursday apologizing for what he called an isolated incident and pledging never to drink and drive.
Martin Garrick, R-Carlsbad (San Diego County), was spotted by California Highway Patrol bicycle patrol officers at 9:36 p.m. Wednesday as he was heading north on 11th Street in Sacramento in his state-issued Toyota Camry, driving 45 mph in the 25 mph zone, said CHP Officer Sean Kennedy.
He ran a stop sign at O Street and did not slow when the officers tried to stop him, driving into the Capitol parking garage, Kennedy said.  ….MORE

Maryland: State Trooper Charged with DUI in Ocean City

A veteran Maryland State Trooper was locked up on charges of DWI/DUI in Ocean City, Md., on June, 11, 2011, according to Maryland court records.
Trooper First Class Matthew Steven Newman, 31, of Prince Frederick, who has been assigned at Southern Maryland barracks in La Plata and Leonardtown for much of the past 10 years, was arrested by Ocean City Police Officer M. Karsnitz.
According to Ocean City Police, Tfc. Newman was arrested on June 11th at 10:49 pm on Coastal Highway  at 112th Street in Ocean City.  Tfc. Newman was charged with driving while impaired and driving under the influence while operating a 2004 Ford. 
Tfc. Newman is represented by Bowie attorney Andrew Alpert, who formerly was a prosecutor in Charles County, Md.
