Missouri: State Highway Patrol list names of those picked up for DWI over Fourth of July weekend; one wreck, driver charged

by admin ·

From Pulaski County Daily
PULASKI COUNTY, Mo. (July 6, 2011) — The July 4 weekend led to numerous arrests in Pulaski County but no serious crashes, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol reports.
The county’s one wreck happened on the evening of Independence Day when Jared A. Holloway, 23, of Richland, rolled his vehicle shortly after 7 p.m. while driving his green Toyota on Rochester Road about half a mile east of Highway 7 and was subsequently arrested at 7:54 p.m. on charges of driving while intoxicated, careless and imprudent driving, and failure to wear his seat belt.
Tri-County firefighters and state troopers on the crash scene said that neither Holloway nor the four passengers in the vehicle had been wearing their seat belts, but none suffered injuries serious enough to be transported by the Pulaski County Ambulance District personnel who responded. Holloway’s passengers were allowed by troopers to leave the crash scene; Holloway was transported to the Pulaski County Jail where he was eligible for bond.
The road remained blocked more than an hour, with Rothmund’s removing it after 8:30 p.m.
A complete crash report wasn’t immediately available due to the lack of injuries, but troopers and firefighters on the scene said the vehicle had skidded into a ditch, returned to the roadway, and rolled over onto its top. That was just one of five weekend arrests made in Pulaski County, all on charges that included drunk driving.

New York: daughter remember’s Dad’s agonizing death at the hands of a drunk driver, one year later

From WPIX

FLUSHING, NY (PIX11)—Courtney Rey Ahlsen of Greenlawn, Long Island drove her pick-up truck to the eastbound service road of the Long Island Expressway in Flushing, Queens Monday. She parked near 150th Street and carried a homemade poster to the fence. It read, “In Memory of John Rey….Drive Safely.” John Rey was her father, and a year ago, as the July 4th weekend was ending, a “wrong way” drunk driver smashed into John Rey’s airport shuttle van at this site. Rey slid out of the van right before it exploded.
The 64-year-old Rey suffered catastrophic injuries, but he battled for his life for sixteen days at New York Hospital-Flushing. His older daughter, Colleen Rey Cassar, recalled, “It was a crucifixion. His abdomen was open, his chest was crushed, his leg was destroyed.” Three days after doctors amputated Rey’s right leg because of severe infection, he died. …..MORE

Texas: no refusal meant automatic trip to jail for DWI drivers in Austin; 73 had their Fourth picnics behind bars

by admin ·

Louisiana: Impairment and Lack of Seat Belt Use Suspected Factors in Fatal Crash

by admin ·
Prairieville (July 5, 2011) –– Louisiana State Police Troop A reports that troopers investigated a single-vehicle fatal crash shortly after 2:00 am in Ascension Parish. The crash occurred on LA 73 north of Interstate 10 and involved a partial ejection due to the occupant being unrestrained.
Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Carl McKnight (W/M, age 22) was driving a 2004 Saturn north on LA 73 north of Interstate 10 when he entered a right-hand curve and ran off the road to the left. McKnight over-corrected and the vehicle re-entered the roadway and began to rotate clockwise as it crossed the roadway and ran off the road to the right. The vehicle then struck a culvert, vaulted into the air, and struck a utility pole. McKnight was not restrained when the crash occurred and was partially ejected. He was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office.
Troopers suspect alcohol to have played a role in the crash and have submitted a sample of McKnight’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.
McKnight was the sole occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

This is the 31st fatal crash that Troop A has investigated this year. In 23 of the 31 fatal crashes, the person killed was not wearing a seat belt. Troopers see these senseless deaths far too often and will continue to enforce the state’s seat belt laws in an effort to eliminate deaths on our highways. Impairment and lack of seat belt use are common factors in fatal crashes and account for an overwhelming majority of highway deaths. Making poor decisions in a vehicle such as driving impaired, riding with an impaired driver, or not wearing a seat belt leads to serious injuries and deaths every day across the state. Making the responsible decision can mean the difference between life and death.
