Colorado: Four out of five fatalities on highways involved drunk drivers; 435 driver caught in police dragnets over Thanksgiving holiday

by admin ·

December 2, 2011 – Traffic Safety – Heat is on Holiday Crackdown Continues through Jan. 2nd.
Denver, CO (December 02, 2011) – Heavy DUI enforcement in Colorado over Thanksgiving week netted 435 drivers suspected of drinking and driving. The arrest numbers are up this holiday season, compared with the same time period last year when 363 drivers were arrested for DUI. According to preliminary reports, there were five people killed in crashes in the state over the Thanksgiving weekend and four of the fatalities involved suspected drunk drivers.
“It’s unfortunate anytime we have traffic fatalities, but it is especially hard to see during the holiday season,” said Col. James Wolfinbarger, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “Plan ahead now for your holiday office parties and family gatherings — Designate a sober driver, take public transportation or call a cab. Don’t make the mistake these 435 drivers made over Thanksgiving. Be responsible and find a safe ride home. And always remember to wear your seat belt.”
The special holiday Heat is On enforcement continues with 76 law enforcement agencies and the Colorado State Patrol planning increased DUI patrols, saturation patrols and other targeted enforcement efforts through Jan. 2, 2012.
Last year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, 1,556 people were arrested for DUI and 18 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes.
Colorado drivers can find tips on how to plan a safe and sober holiday party, find overnight parking locations and public transportation options by visiting www.PlanAheadColorado.com. CDOT has also launched a new Facebook page (facebook.com/ColoradoDOT) with an interactive game featuring an office holiday party with Santa’s elves. Oklahoma: “If you’re going to make the decision to drink and drive, if you’re going to put everyone else at risk, then we’re going to be out there to take you off the roads and put you in prison,” one trooper said.

From NewsOn6.com
All Mark McSherry saw were headlights coming toward his Jeep.
“Tried to turn away from us, we turned away from them. Then all of a sudden they changed their mind and turned toward us,” McSherry said.
McSherry, his wife and three children were driving south on Cincinnati when troopers say Nicholas Mancino hit their car head-on. Troopers arrested Mancino for driving drunk.
A TLC photographer caught it all on camera for a series called “DUI.” The show shadows Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers.
“Looking for any kind of behavior that’s outside of the norm,” OHP Trooper Chris West said.
As they pull over drunk and high drivers, OHP says producers chose Oklahoma for the show because the state takes DUI’s seriously. …MORE

From Seattle PI
If a state representative has his way, penalties for drunks on the road will be a lot tougher.
State Rep. Roger Goodman, D-Kirkland, wants tougher penalties for vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. He’s also working on a proposal that would require a drunken driver who kills or severely injures a parents to pay child support for the victim’s kids.
“Incarceration is not proven to deter drunk driving, but nevertheless offenders are getting out too soon,” said Goodman, who is a candidate to replace U.S. Rep Jay Inslee, who is running for governor. ….MORE
