North Carolina: Curtis Lutterloh pleaded guilty killing Darren Jones and leaving Carl Wheeler paralyzed in drunk driving crash

Graham, NC– On Tuesday, in Alamance County, a judge sentenced a man to prison for his role in a fatal drunk driving crash. Curtis Lutterloh pleaded guilty to killing 17-year-old,
Darren Jones and leaving 38-year-old Carl Wheeler paralyzed and unable to speak. A judge sentenced Lutterloh to between 41 to 59 months in prison.
Part of that sentence would not have been possible in the past. Recent state law changed to make serious injury by vehicle a felony. Part of his sentence was extended thanks to that new legislation.
But the two victims’ families say knowing that doesn’t bring them peace. ….MORE

California: Meth-head and drunk driver gets 18 years in prison for killing four in head-on crash

VISTA, Calif. — A woman who was drunk and high on methamphetamine when she crashed a GMC Yukon head-on into a Toyota Camry near the Pala Casino in 2007 – - killing two couples — learned her punishment Wednesday.
Deanna Fridley, 27, was sentenced to 18 years in prison. She pleaded guilty last month to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury.
The two couples — best friends for about 15 years — were on their way home after dinner and gambling when Luis De Santiago’s Toyota Camry was struck head-on by Fridley’s SUV. De Santiago, his wife Lina, Luis Baez and his wife Rubi were killed.
Between them, the couples had five children and one grandchild. ….MORE

Illinois: Great Hopping Hyundais! Cops say man leapt from his car after starting fatal chain-reaction with bus and beer truck; charged DUI

A Blue Island man previously cited in a fatal chain-reaction crash with a CTA bus and a beer truck will appear in bond court Wednesday on felony DUI charges.
Walter Thompson, 30, allegedly tried to run away from the wreck after the 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe he was driving crashed in the 1400 block of West 115th Street about 3 p.m. Monday, police said. He was later arrested at 118th Street and Ashland Avenue and taken to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island in stable condition, police said.
Thompson, of the 12900 block of Page Court in Blue Island, was charged with one count of aggravated DUI involving a fatal accident, and one count of aggravated DUI involving an accident causing bodily harm, according to police.
He already was issued traffic citations — including DUI, damaging city property, driving with a revoked license and three counts of leaving the scene of an accident — for the deadly crash, according to police. One man was killed and four other people….MORE

Rhode Island: Ride with a drunk, buy a ticket to your own funeral; man charged with death of college student

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. – Drunk driving charges will be filed in connection with an accident that killed a URI student.
Erica Knowles, 23, died when the car she was riding in struck a utility pole on Torrey Road in South Kingstown last week.
On Tuesday, South Kingstown police said they now have an arrest warrant for the driver, 46-year-old Dean Philbrick.
Philbrick is being treated at Rhode Island Hospital for injuries he suffered in the crash.
Police say Philbrick will be charged with driving under the influence, death resulting, and driving to endanger, death resulting. ….MORE

Ohio: he tried to kill his pals in booze cruise; Judge sends him to slammer for four years

CANTON — If he was the judge, Kyle D. Byelene said, he’d probably put himself in jail for driving drunk and seriously hurting two friends in a car crash.
The 18-year-old high school senior pleaded guilty Tuesday to two felony counts of aggravated vehicular assault, two felony counts of vehicular assault and misdemeanor operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination of them.
Stark County Common Pleas Judge Frank Forchione, who asked Byelene for his thoughts on punishment, sentenced Byelene to four years in prison, suspended his driver’s license for three years and fined him $500.
Forchione said he would consider placing Byelene in the Stark Regional Community Correction Center after he serves six months ….MORE
