A Sebastopol man arrested during a traffic stop Thursday because of drugs and paraphernalia in his car faced further trouble when police searched his home and turned up unauthorized firearms and ammunition, authorities said.
Owen Tarr Miller, 44, already was on probation for driving under the influence of drugs when he was stopped on North Main Street in downtown Sebastopol and found with marijuana, methamphetamine and a pipe, police said. ….MORE

California: motorcyclist charged with DUI after crash critically injured his passenger

A former Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested early Thursday morning for his alleged role in a DUI motorcycle crash that left a 30-year-old Eureka woman fighting for her life.
Michael Campbell, a 41-year-old retired deputy, was booked into the Humboldt County jail shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of felony DUI after allegedly crashing his motorcycle on Eureka’s Waterfront Drive, leaving his passenger, 30-year-old Cara Banducci, of Eureka, with life-threatening injuries.
According to Eureka Police Department traffic officer Gary Whitmer, a passing motorist called 911 at about 1 a.m. Thursday and reported seeing a downed motorcycle in the roadway near the public marina. Emergency personnel responded to find Campbell and Banducci lying on Waterfront Drive and quickly transported them to St. Joseph Hospital, where Banducci was treated before being flown to University of California Davis Medical Center, where she remained in critical condition as of late Thursday, according to nursing supervisor Kathleen Madge.
Whitmer said the cause of the crash remains under investigation, but no other vehicles were involved. The officer said it appears Campbell’s motorcycle went down and slid into a curb before hitting a sign pole. ….MORE

— Last year, Robert Felix’s two children celebrated their birthdays at his hospital bedside, he said.
Felix, who has been a Monmouth County corrections officer for 15 years, said he missed out on his children’s school functions and sporting events, as he recuperated from the injuries he suffered in a car crash last year.
“It was heartbreaking to know I couldn’t be part of their everyday activities,” Felix, 41, of Keansburg, said in court Friday at the sentencing of Andrew J. Adell.
Adell, 31, of Hazlet, who pleaded guilty in December to assault by auto and driving while intoxicated, was sentenced to two years’ probation ….MORE

CAMBRIDGE —A Stark County High School student’s driving under the influence in a high-speed crash caused the deaths of three schoolmates and the injury of another, Henry County authorities allege.
Morgan Blakey, 19, of Toulon was arrested Thursday night on felony charges of aggravated DUI and reckless homicide arising from a single-vehicle rollover accident Nov. 29 on a rural road southeast of Kewanee.
The intoxicating substance allegedly involved was not alcohol, as is commonly associated with DUI charges and was mentioned in an earlier online Journal Star story, but rather a chemical “huffed” or inhaled from an aerosol dust-cleaning product commonly used on electronic products, according to Henry County State’s Attorney Terry Patton.  ….MORE

New Jersey: Mount Olive Township Police report arrests of DWI drivers; beware of the Ides of March!

Mount Olive N. J. Township Police report that on February 29th, 2012 at 04:04 pm Officer Marianne Wurtemberg responded to a motor vehicle accident along route 206 in the Flanders section of the Township. While investigating the collision Wurtemberg observed one of the drivers, now identified as Michele Dugan, 40, of Flanders NJ, appeared to be impaired.
After a brief investigation Dugan was arrested for DWI. Dugan was transported to police headquarters where she was processed and charged with DWI as well as several other motor vehicle offenses. Dugan was released without bail pending her court appearance. The other driver was uninjured and was released from the accident scene.
On 03/02/2012 at 01:54 am Officer Paul Ottavinia was on patrol along route 46 in the Budd Lake section of the Township when he observed a 2001 blue Dodge speeding along the highway. Ottavinia stopped the vehicle and went to speak with the driver, now identified as Craig Michaels, 39, of Rockaway NJ. Michaels displayed signs of impairment and after a brief investigation Michaels was arrested for DWI. Michaels was transported to police headquarters where he was processed and charged with DWI as well as several other motor vehicle offenses. Michaels was released without bail pending his court appearance.

Maryland: booze and speed blamed for driver’s fatal crash into tree; passenger critical

(March 2, 2012) — A Mechanicsville area man died and his passenger was critically injured Wednesday afternoon when the sport utility vehicle they were riding in went off Maypole Road near Leonardtown, police report, and hit trees along the roadway.
Killed in the 4 p.m. crash was 45-year-old David Jodie Quade, who was driving the 1997 Ford Explorer north on the road away from Route 5 when it left the pavement for unknown reasons and continued traveling in a ditch, according to St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputies. The vehicle’s passenger side rear quarter panel hit one tree, before the SUV spun around and its driver’s side struck another tree. ….MORE

Pennsylvania: drunk driver shut down Philly International Airport for 30 minutes when he drove on runway

PHILADELPHIA – Police say an intoxicated 24-year-old in an SUV crashed through a security gate and drove onto two runways at Philadelphia International Airport on Thursday morning.
Investigators say the incident began at about 11 a.m. when a Jeep Cherokee driven by Kenneth Mazik crashed through a chain-link fence surrounding the airport. The high-speed chase down the runway was captured by ground radar and controllers.
CBS Philly reports Mazik drove around the airport for several minutes before police were able to stop the car and take him into custody. He was taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and now faces DUI charges. Federal charges are also possible.  ….MORE
