VINELAND
— A city man charged with six drunken driving offenses in a 3-month period earlier this year will spend a year in jail and lose his driver’s license for 34 years, a municipal judge ruled Thursday.
Anderson Sotomayor, 45, was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to three drunken driving offenses, according to attorney Frank Amari Jr., who served as Sotomayor’s public defender.
Sotomayor made headlines through the spring as he continued to rack up DWI charges in Vineland, drawing outrage from some citizens and elected officials. His arrests have inspired state legislation intended to increase penalties for repeat drunk drivers.
In addition to the guilty pleas in three of the cases handled Thursday, a fourth DWI charge was dismissed. ….MORE

Florida: lawnmower operator earns 5th DUI when driving on wrong side of the road

by admin ·

From WDBO
MARION COUNTY, Fla. — A 68-year-old Marion County man was charged with his fifth DUI after he was pulled over while riding his lawn mower, according to deputies.
“The reason I’m stopping you is because you’re driving a lawn mower in the opposite lane of traffic,” the deputy said.
“I thought that’s the way I was supposed to,” replied James Gray.
“No, you’re not supposed to drive a lawn mower on the street at all,” said the deputy.
A dash camera was rolling when the deputy found Gray driving his lawn mower in the wrong direction down Northeast 30th Court on Tuesday.
When asked for his driver’s license, Gray told the deputy that he didn’t have one and hasn’t since 1985 due to a DUI.….MORE

California: When the Coach is a Killer! Central HS coach Loren LeBeau killed child while driving drunk; then he fled

by admin ·

From KMPH
FRESNO, Calif.  -The high school basketball coach who police say was driving drunk and slammed into a Fresno family on July 25, killing a young boy, made his first court appearance Thursday morning.
Loren LeBeau, 42, walked into the Fresno County courthouse wearing an alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet.
LeBeau was supposed to be arraigned Thursday, but his hearing was postponed because his attorney disagrees with how some of the charges were filed.
Attorney Jess Hammerschmidt says one of the charges states LeBeau used his car as a weapon. He argues it was an accident.
Here is a list of the four felony charges filed against LeBeau Wednesday afternoon:
– Gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated
– DUI causing injury
– Driving with a 0.08% blood alcohol causing injury
– Leaving the scene of an accident – death or permanent serious injury
Seven-year-old Donovan Maldonado’s family was there for LeBeau’s court appearance, but LeBeau’s attorney focused on his client’s suffering through all of this.  ….MORE
