From The Daily Mail
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The two state troopers shot near the Roane-Clay county line were fired upon from the back seat of their cruiser by a handcuffed man they had arrested for reckless and intoxicated driving.
Col. Jay Smithers, West Virginia State Police superintendent, and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin spoke Wednesday at State Police Headquarters in South Charleston about Tuesday night’s incident.
They spoke a few feet from the Hall of Honor where the names and photographs of 38 fallen troopers line the wood-paneled walls.
The last trooper shot and killed in the line of duty was nearly 20 years ago. Senior Trooper Larry Hacker was shot and killed in 1993 in Ritchie County, where he was responding to a dispute between neighbors.
The corridor is a quiet and somber place on normal days, but Wednesday was different. Another name would be added soon.
“Today, we are faced with the harsh reality of adding yet another portrait,” Smithers said.
Emergency dispatchers in Nicholas County notified law enforcement at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday that a white Chevrolet Silverado was traveling recklessly in the northbound lanes of Interstate 79. The pickup crashed in the median and then sped south.
Troopers identified the driver as Luke Baber, 22, of Oak Hill.    …..MORE
