SANTA CRUZ — A 23-year-old Fresno man was charged with murder Wednesday for a car crash on Graham Hill Road that took the life of his ex-girlfriend, a 24-year-old woman from Aptos.

Marquis Edwards, who authorities say drove a rented 2014 Ford Fusion into a wall on Graham Hill Road early Saturday, closed his eyes and took a deep breath in court Wednesday afternoon as Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge Paul Burdick read the charges against him.

Edwards, who did not enter a plea, was charged with murder, felony evading an officer causing death, felony evading an officer while driving against traffic and special allegations of great bodily injury and being on felony probation, according to court documents. Edwards also was charged with a misdemeanor of driving with a suspended license with a DUI conviction.

He faces life in prison if convicted, Burdick said in court.
