South Carolina: Gabriel Lee Gratto charged with felony DUI in death of Joan Errickson, keeping Myrtle Beach a deadly destination

MYRTLE BEACH —  A Myrtle Beach man was charged with felony driving under the influence in connection with a vehicle crash Wednesday night that killed a woman as she drove along Prestwick Club Drive, according to authorities.

Gabriel Lee Gratto, 28, of Myrtle Beach was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center at 12:13 a.m. Thursday and is being held there pending a bond hearing, according to jail records.

Gratto is charged with felony DUI in connection with the crash that happened about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on Secondary Highway 394, said Sgt. Bob Beres with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The limousine driver who allegedly was drunk when he drove 23 teenagers in a party bus to the Oswego East High School prom Saturday night says he is innocent and that mechanical issues with the vehicle were at fault for his erratic driving.

“I’m not guilty, but it is what it is,” Richard L. Madison told the Chicago Sun-Times on Sunday, a day after his arrest. “The bus needs wheel alignment and that’s why it was moving the way it did.” ….MORE

A Billings man who witnesses said was driving a van that was ”swerving  all over the road” was arraigned Friday on what prosecutors said is his fifth  drunken-driving offense.

Joseph Allan Seward, 45, appeared before District Judge Mary Jane Knisely and  pleaded not guilty to felony DUI. His bond was set at $10,000 after a prosecutor  said Seward was previously convicted of  DUI in 1990, 2000, and twice  in 2002.

Seward was arrested April 29 after witnesses called 911 to report a  Chevrolet Venture “swerving all over the road and cutting off other  drivers” on King Avenue West.

ESTERO — A Punta Gorda man was killed Thursday night when his motorcycle was struck by a sport utility vehicle and dragged miles in an alcohol-related crash on U.S. 41, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

Carl Edward Patrick, 54, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred a few minutes before 10 p.m. at U.S. 41 and Constitution Boulevard in San Carlos Park, the FHP reports.

Donna Lynne Brown, 54, of Estero, was cited by the FHP for DUI manslaughter, DUI property damage, hit and run with death, DUI and careless driving. She remains in a Lee County jail, and her bond has been set at $70,000, according to Lee County’s Sheriff’s Office records….MORE

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Metro police have charged a man with murder and other offenses after they say he walked away from the scene of a fatal crash involving a motorcyclist late Wednesday night.

Genaro Herrera Hernandez, 27, is charged with murder, DUI, assault, wanton endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident. criminal mischief and driving without a license.  Metro police did not provide his hometown.

Hernandez could answer the charges as soon as Friday morning in district court.  He sat in Metro Corrections in downtown Louisville late Thursday.

HARRELLS, N.C. – A truck driver in Sampson County has been charged with driving while impaired (DWI) and other crimes in relation to the hit-and-run death of a 7-year-old girl.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Johnny Allen Spell, 37, of Bud Spell Lane in Roseboro, was heading south on Highway 421 in the Harrells area of Sampson County on Tuesday afternoon when he passed a stopped school bus and hit Alyiah Morgan. Morgan was a 1st-grade student at nearby Union Elementary School. The girl was pronounced dead on the way to Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton, Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Jeff Gordon said.

Gordon said the bus’s flashing red lights were on, and its stop sign was out. He said troopers found Spell and his truck about 25 miles away in the parking area of the small trucking company on Hayne Stretch Road where Spell worked.
