Child who’s father was killed by drunk driver lingers near death

MACON, ILL. — According to the Macon County Sheriff”s Office on Aug. 6, 2015 at approximately 7:40pm, the Macon County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a two motor vehicle traffic crash on Andrews Street Rd between Jacobs Rd. and Cornthwaite Rd. east of Macon, IL.

Upon arrival, deputies located a 2003 Ford sport utility vehicle and a 2009 Ford passenger car, which had collided head on. The driver of the Ford utility vehicle, Richard Rodgers Jr., a 32 year old male from Effingham, was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital where he was being treated for what was initially believed to be life threatening injuries. A 4 year old male passenger in the passenger car was also transported to St. Mary’s Hospital and later air lifted to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield with life threatening injuries. The 4 year old passenger remains in St. John’s Hospital in Springfield in critical condition. The driver of the sport utility remains in St. Mary’s Hospital in stable condition.

This investigation is still on going by the Macon County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team. Names of the driver of the sport utility and the 4 year old are not being released at this time.

Assisting at the scene was the South Macon Fire Department, Warrensburg Fire Department, Decatur Ambulance Service and Macon County Highway Dept.

Our office arrested an Effingham man today as the result of the on going investigation into the fatal traffic crash on Andrews Street Rd between Cornthwaite Rd and Jacobs Rd. that occurred on Thursday, August 6th.  Please continue to pray for the 4 year old child who still remains in critical condition in a Springfield hospital.
