Wrong Way Driver Crash Kills One

Sheriff Dave Wedding reports that on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at approximately 10:34 pm the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to University Parkway north of the Lloyd Expressway in reference to a motor vehicle crash with injuries.

A 911 call indicated that one of the involved vehicles was on fire and that the occupants were trapped inside.  A Sheriff’s deputy working off-duty security at the University of Southern Indiana arrived on-scene at approximately 10:36 pm.

The deputy located two crashed vehicles in the northbound lanes of University Parkway between Middle Mt. Vernon Road and Hogue Road.

The deputy utilized a fire extinguisher from his patrol vehicle to extinguish the fire and then began to render aid.Three occupants were in a black 2007 Hyundai Tiburon and one occupant was in a maroon 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Both vehicles had suffered significant damage from an apparent head on collision.Firefighters from Perry Township Fire Department and multiple ambulances from AMR responded to the scene. Occupants from both vehicles had to be extricated.

The drivers of both vehicles were transported to Deaconess Hospital for treatment due to life threatening injuries and a passenger in the Hyundai was transported to St.Mary’s Hospital for treatment due to life threatening injuries. A third passenger in the Hyundai was deceased at the scene.

Preliminary evidence at the scene indicated that the driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was travelling the wrong way southbound in the northbound lanes of University Parkway prior to the collision. A Sheriff’s Office reconstructionist was called to the scene and the crash remains under investigation. Preliminary evidence has confirmed alcohol to have been a factor in the crash.The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased.
