Thomas Powell sentenced to three years in prison on drug charges

ELLSWORTH, Maine (2009) — A Hancock man who assaulted a police officer has been sent to prison to serve three years behind bars for a previous drug conviction.

Thomas A. Powell III, 20, had been participating in drug court after having been convicted of trafficking in cocaine in 2007. Powell had not met his requirements as a drug court participant when, on Nov. 17, a Hancock County deputy sheriff saw him at Gott’s Store in Southwest Harbor.

Deputy Rob Morang went to place Powell under arrest but Powell allegedly assaulted the officer, punching him in the face before fleeing on foot into the woods behind the store. Officers with seven area law enforcement agencies, including a Maine State Police trooper and a police dog, went to the scene. With the help of the state police dog, officers caught Powell in the woods about an hour later and took him to jail in Ellsworth.

In early 2007, Powell twice drove a Sullivan man to Bangor so the other man could purchase cocaine, according to documents filed in Hancock County Superior Court. On the second occasion, while Powell was driving the man back to Ellsworth from Bangor, they were stopped by police, who found approximately 1 ounce of cocaine in the car and about $900 in cash that previously had been identified by police for use in a controlled drug purchase, the documents indicate.  MORE
