From Omaha World:

A 27-year-old motorist from Honduras who authorities say is in the U.S. illegally has been arrested in connection with a vehicle-pedestrian fatality in northwest Omaha.

Edwin Elvir-Palma has been a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement fugitive since 2012, according to a police report. He was booked Saturday on suspicion of reckless driving, fourth offense felony DUI, not having a driver’s license and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident that results in serious injury or death.

Authorities say Elvir-Palma had been with Margarito Nava-Luna at Bogie’s Bar and Grill, 3305 Old Maple Road, on Friday night.

About 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Nava-Luna was struck by a vehicle at North 104th Avenue and Manderson Plaza, just northeast of 108th Street and West Maple Road, Omaha police said.

Nava-Luna, 34, was walking in the westbound lane of Manderson Plaza, which doesn’t have a sidewalk. An eastbound vehicle crossed the center line and struck Nava-Luna, police said. The driver of the vehicle then fled north on 104th Avenue, police said.

Officers were called to the scene at about 2:30 a.m., and Nava-Luna was declared dead.

Elvir-Palma was arrested at about 2:45 a.m. after a traffic stop near 134th Street and Camden Avenue by a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputy. Elvir-Palma was driving a gray 2007 GMC Acadia SUV.

Just before the traffic stop, Douglas County 911 dispatchers had issued a report about a possibly intoxicated driver in a gray SUV. In addition, a motorist flagged down a deputy about a similar vehicle that had been following her, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The deputy saw the vehicle drive by and stopped it.

The Sheriff’s Office said the driver identified himself as Orling Carrasco-Zelaya, 26, of Honduras, had no driver’s license and appeared to be intoxicated. He was given a breath test and it registered .239, or about three times the legal limit of alcohol for driving, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Later, a second identity — Elvir-Palma — was established for the man, the office said, and an immigration hold was placed on him. He is being held in the Douglas County jail.  .MORE
