New Mexico: DWI crashes take a deadly and violent turn upwards; Alan Sanchez latest to kill himself while speeding DWI in death ride to hell

Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The wave of drunk driving crashes continues. The most recent, an overnight crash killing 25-year-old Alan Sanchez. Deputies say Sanchez was speeding when he crossed the center medium near Coors and Gun Club. He then hit another car and rolled several times.

Unfortunately authorities say this is just the most recent of many DWI arrests and crashes. Police say they’re cracking down on drunk drivers. Yet they’re still arresting about the same amount of offenders each month.

A teacher in Roswell was killed in a wreck due to a suspected drunk driver hitting her vehicle. Over the weekend there were three DWI related crashes. One was off San Antonio and Wyoming where a vehicle went into a house. Another was a single vehicle crash where a motorist hit a barrier on I-40 near Eubank. Police also suspect drinking and drag racing led to another weekend crash near Montgomery and San Mateo.

Just last week a car burst into flames after a suspected drunk driver hit a light pole.

State police alone say they made 33 DWI arrests last month just in the Albuquerque area

“Unfortunately that’s 33 too many and so not only are we facing an issue where we do have an officer shortage and even still with that, in 1 month, there were 33 DWI arrests made,” said Sgt. Elizabeth Armijo.

State police did mention they are facing an officer shortage and say that makes that arrest number even more startling.

State police also say they’re doing everything they can to promote sober driving with billboards, checkpoints and even more patrols at night but people are choosing to still drink and drive.

They’re hosting another DWI check point in Albuquerque this week. ….MORE
