Washington: lawmaker wants to make DUI killers pay child support for children of victims

If a state representative has his way, penalties for drunks on the road will be a lot tougher.
State Rep. Roger Goodman, D-Kirkland, wants tougher penalties for vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. He’s also working on a proposal that would require a drunken driver who kills or severely injures a parents to pay child support for the victim’s kids.
“Incarceration is not proven to deter drunk driving, but nevertheless offenders are getting out too soon,” said Goodman, who is a candidate to replace U.S. Rep Jay Inslee, who is running for governor. ….MORE

Washington: man who beat his chest like a gorrilla after killing Steve Lacey in drunk road rage pleads not guilty

Patrick Rexroat, 56, of Montlake Terrace, plead not guilty to charges of vehicular homicide and reckless driving Tuesday morning to the shock of family and friends of Steve Lacey.
A Google engineer, Lacey was killed in a drunk driving and road rage collision with Rexroat on July 24 while returning from an errand to Costco.
If convicted of the charges, Rexroat will face 31 to 41 months in prison, or 3 1/2 years.
Lacey’s sister, Sue said that the plea and the potential punishment was “disgusting.”
Rexroat entered the plea in King County Superior Court, as nearly 20 of Lacey’s family and friends, including his wife, Nabila and mother, Janet looked on wearing t-shirts in his memory.  ….MORE

Washington: witness says man who killed in roadrage DUI crash pounded his chest like a gorilla when he climbed out of his truck

After his SUV slammed into another man’s car in Kirkland on Sunday afternoon, the driver got out and “pounded on his chest like a gorilla,” according to a witness to the fatal crash.
Steven Lacey, the driver of the car, was killed instantly, according to Patricia Kaiser, of Kirkland, who witnessed the crash near Interstate 405. The driver of the SUV, identified by the State Patrol as Patrick Rexroat, was charged Wednesday with vehicular homicide while under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving.

Washington: bail set at $1 million for driver accused of killing Steve Lacey in case of drunken roadrage

SEATTLE — The man accused of killing a Google software developer during a drunken road-rage incident has been freed, and the victim’s friends say they’re outraged.
State troopers say Steve Lacey was running errands when an SUV crossed the center line and killed him at NE 85th and Interstate 90.
On Monday, prosecutors requested that bail for Patrick Rexroat be set at $1 million, citing his blood-alcohol level measure 0.328 – four times the legal limit – at the time of his arrest. But because Rexroat had no prior criminal history, the judge set bail at $50,000. ….MORE
