Alaska: Wellness Court gives Felony DUI offenders a chance at a deep breath of booze free air instead of prison

FAIRBANKS — About two dozen felony DUI offenders walked one by one from the back of the gallery toward the defendant’s table. They talked to the judge for a few minutes, blew into a handheld breathalizer and then returned to their seats. The rest of the defendants, plus a prosecutor, public defender and several others, clapped after each turn.
Fairbanks Wellness Court meets every Thursday in the Rabinowitz Courthouse. It includes 27 participants who have been convicted of felony DUI — three DUIs within 10 years. The gallery was filled with young men in work clothes and a few women and middle-aged men…..MORE
