The Pima County Sheriff reports that on January 1, 2020, at about 6:15 a.m., Deputies responded to La Cholla Blvd. just South of Fountains Avenue for a report of a collision involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, Deputies discovered that a pedestrian had been in the roadway when he was struck by a passenger vehicle. Life-saving efforts were made, but the pedestrian was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The pedestrian has been identified as 20-year-old Geoffrey Velez.

Traffic investigators have taken over the investigation, which resulted in an arrest of  30-year-old Maurice Blanchard Williams for Manslaughter and Driving Under the Influence.

The investigation is in the early stages and more information will be released as it becomes available. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is urged to call 9-1-1 or, if you wish to remain anonymous, 88-crime.
