From Sacramento Bee:
A fiery head-on collision in Yuba City Saturday afternoon left three people dead and the driver of one of the vehicles under arrest facing manslaughter and driving under the influence charges, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred at 3:48 p.m. on State Route 113 near Schlagle Road when a 2007 Ford F250 pickup truck driven by Michael Allan Jones, 38, veered off to the right side of the road, then overcorrected and ran into oncoming traffic, the CHP said.

The truck collided head-on with a 1991 Honda Accord with three people inside, and the Honda flipped over and caught fire, the CHP said…..Read more

Jones killed three brothers while four times the legal limit; had DUI record, bail set at $250,000

From Appeal-Democrat

Two months after an Oroville man was arrested for drunken driving, authorities allege he climbed behind the wheel with no license and a blood alcohol content more than four times the legal limit and killed three Yuba City brothers.

Michael Allan Jones, 38, appeared in court over video conference from the Sutter County Jail after he was discharged from Rideout Memorial Hospital on Tuesday following Saturday’s fiery crash.

Jones requested the judge clear other inmates from the room before his case was heard, then pleaded not guilty to two counts of felony driving while under the influence with sentencing enhancements for causing great bodily injury and having a blood alcohol content greater than .15 percent. He is also charged with a misdemeanor for driving on a suspended license.

District Attorney Amanda Hopper said she did not file vehicular manslaughter charges because, if convicted, Jones would receive more time in prison as he is charged.

Jones could be sentenced to 12 years in state prison. Because the charges are violent strikes, he would have to serve at least 85 percent of the time.

“The sentencing schemes are just not good enough in this situation,” Hopper said.

Jones was arrested by the California Highway Patrol after the truck he was driving veered into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle head-on on Highway 113.

The bodies were so severely burned that authorities have not yet been able to positively identify two people.

But family members identified the victims as Yuba City High School student Lucas Blanco, 15; Antonio Blanco, 19; and Carlos Blanco, 21. The older brothers are both new fathers.

Sutter County Superior Court Judge Brian Aronson set bail at $250,000 after Hopper requested it be $1 million. ….MORE
