San Jose Police report that on Dec. 21, 2024, several Officers were struck by a drunk driver who collided with two parked patrol vehicles. Fortunately, the officers escaped with only minor injuries.
Please remember that drunk or “buzzed” driving is never okay this holiday season. Choose safety this holiday season, designate a sober driver, use ride-share services, or stay the night. Let’s keep everyone safe so that they can spend this holiday season with loved ones.
On December 20, 2024, the San José Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint from 9:00 PM – 3:00 AM at an undisclosed location.
“Impaired driving is preventable,” SJPD Lieutenant Nqui Scherry said. “It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or have taken drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”
The San José Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
