California: elderly couple out for morning walk killed by Earl Smith Jr., who police say was boozing and cruising, charged with DUI

NORTH COUNTY – According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), an elderly man and woman from Valley Center were killed while taking their morning walk by a driver that is suspected of driving under the influence.

This morning (July 7) at approximately 6:15 a.m., 20 year-old Earl Smith Jr. of Oceanside was driving his 2011 Toyota Corolla eastbound on Old Castle Rd near Mauka Dr. at an unknown speed “Smith drifted to the right of the roadway and collided into an elderly couple, a 79-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman who were walking eastbound with their backs to traffic,” said CHP public information officer James Bettencourt. “Both were from Valley Center and died instantly at the scene.” ….MORE
