California: ex-cop Michael Joseph Campbell faces murder charges in DUI fatality of Cara Banduci

A former Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputy has been charged with murder for his alleged role in a DUI motorcycle crash that claimed the life of a 30-year-old Eureka native.
The California Attorney General’s Office filed charges of murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated Friday against Michael Joseph Campbell, 41, who worked as a Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office deputy for 15 years before retiring in 2010.
Police allege Campbell was under the influence on March 1 when the motorcycle he was driving fell into a slide on Eureka’s Waterfront Drive shortly before 1 a.m. Cara Banducci — Campbell’s passenger — suffered major head and neck injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead the following day.
A blood draw taken from Campbell shortly after the crash found his blood alcohol level to be above the legal limit, according to Eureka Police Department Detective Ron Harpham.
