Palo Alto, CA — An adult pedestrian was struck and killed this morning after a vehicle left the roadway, struck a power pole, and rolled over on East Bayshore Road. The driver of the vehicle survived and was uninjured, and police have arrested him for vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI, and misdemeanor unlicensed driving.
On Monday, October 13, 2014, at about 6:15 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call reporting a major injury collision in the 2000 block of East Bayshore Road. Officers responded and found a deceased adult male in the roadway. The driver and solo occupant of the involved vehicle, a silver 2007 Nissan Maxima, was uninjured and remained at the scene to cooperate with police.
The initial investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling southbound on East Bayshore Road when it left the roadway and struck a power pole on the east curb line of the 2000 block. The vehicle rolled over and came to rest in the roadway. The deceased male was on foot in the area when he was struck and killed; at this point, it is unknown for certain where he was at the time of the collision.

Police have shut down vehicle traffic on East Bayshore Road between Embarcadero Road and Pulgas Avenue during the investigation into this collision, and anticipate that the roadway will be closed for several hours to allow officers to safely process the scene and collect evidence. Police booked 19-year-old Sunnyvale resident Miguel Zaragoza Torres at the Santa Clara County Main Jail for vehicular manslaughter, felony driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and misdemeanor unlicensed driving.
Police are not releasing the identity of the victim. That information can ultimately be obtained from the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
