REDWOOD CITY — A Daly City man charged with a drunken car crash that killed his girlfriend and two others Memorial Day in Colma was ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail at his first court hearing Thursday.

Paul Diaz, standing in orange jail clothes behind a glass barrier, didn’t enter a plea to three felony counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The 25-year-old man turned himself in to police Monday, about six hours after the 7:30 a.m. crash near Cypress Lawn cemetery that tore in half the Ford Mustang he was driving at up to 90 mph, prosecutors said.

In response to a prosecution request, San Mateo County Superior Court Commissioner Elizabeth Hill hiked Diaz’s bail from $750,000 to $1 million. Her order was over the opposition of attorney Cristina Mazzei, who argued Diaz didn’t have an extensive criminal record and turned himself in. He was convicted in 2009 of misdemeanor drunken driving.

Pushing for higher bail, deputy district attorney Sean Gallagher cited a threat to public safety as well as the heavy human toll of the crash. Ruvin Abel Vazquez, 22; Jonathan Jade Mouton, 21; and Diaz’s girlfriend Rosa Maria Falla, 23, all of Daly City, were killed after being ejected from the Ford. Diaz was apparently
