Double Fatal / DUI Crash- N. Tower Road @ E. 22nd Ave.

Aurora Police Lieutenant Michael A. McClelland reports that the late night bar crowd was a real killer on city streets early on Tuesday, March 10, 2015. Drivers leaving bars became entangled leaving one dead and an innocent motorist also dead. One man is in a hospital and faces charges of two counts of DUI homicide.

The police report that at about 1:55 am, patrol officers responded to the area of N. Tower Road @ E. 22nd Ave. on a report of a three vehicle crash.  Upon arrival investigation revealed the following:

A blue Ford Escort ZX2, driven by a 45-year-old female, was northbound on Tower Road from E. Colfax Ave.  She was apparently following her boyfriend, who was in a vehicle in front of her.  They were both driving home after patronizing a local drinking establishment.

A black GMC Yukon Denali, driven by a 30-year-old male, was also northbound on Tower Road from E. Colfax Ave., also coming from a local drinking establishment, drove up behind the blue Ford Escort at a high rate of speed, rear-ending it, causing the Escort to lose control and spin off the roadway.  The GMC also lost control and went into the southbound lanes of Tower Road.

A blue Ford F-150, driven by a 60yo male, was southbound on Tower Road.  The GMC Yukon went into the southbound lanes and crashed into the F-150, forcing it off the roadway as well.

The drivers of the Ford Escort and Ford F-150 were pronounced dead on scene shortly after being evaluated by AFD.  The driver of the GMC Yukon was taken to local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.  He is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol at this time.

This crash is being investigated by APD Traffic under case # 2015-9240.   Excessive speed and alcohol intoxication are believed to be factors in this crash.  Charges against the driver of the GMC Yukon are pending, but may result in two counts of Vehicular Homicide resulting in death, and DUI.
