DENVER – A crumpled-up pile of metal is all that is left of a Pontiac Vibe after a serious crash at South Colorado Boulevard and East Mexico Avenue on Sunday.
The Vibe was one of two cars that were stopped at a red light at the intersection when police said a black SUV hit them. Witnesses estimated the vehicle was traveling 70 to 80 mph.
“Every time you increase your speed another 10 mph, you’re quadrupling the energy that you’re bringing down the road with you. It’s a simple physics formula and I don’t think a lot of folks have an appreciation for how dangerous that can be,” Denver Police Department Lt. Robert Rock said.

DENVER – The man accused of causing the South Colorado Boulevard crash that killed two people and critically injured five others on Sunday is a limousine driver with a history of traffic violations.
Denver7 Reporter Jaclyn Allen confirmed with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission that 55-year-old Semere Dawit passed a criminal background check required for limo drivers in the state.
The black Chevrolet Suburban that Dawit was driving during the four-vehicle crash has a permit number issued to Planet Limo LLC, and the registered the limited liability company to an East Florida Avenue apartment building where he lives.
Secretary of State records show the person who formed the LLC is Hirut Hagos, and public records indicate that Hagos is a relative of Dawit and lives with him.
The apartment is two blocks from the scene of the deadly crash at South Colorado Boulevard and East Mexico Avenue.
