Cape Coral Police report motorcyclist Charles Thomas Duffy killed by DUI driver David McDonough of Colorado

Crash took place in front of German-American Social Club

David McDonough Jr. charged with killing motorcyclist in Cape Coral Fla Pine Island Road July 18, 2017

Cape Coral, Fla. (July 19, 2017) – Cape Coral Police report that a crash that shut down Pine Island Road for several hours on July 18, 2017, resulted in one fatality, and also in an arrest for the driver responsible for the crash.

Cape Coral Police responded to a traffic crash at the 2100 block of SW Pine Island Road between a pickup truck and a motorcycle.

A Traffic Homicide Investigator responded to the scene, and after an investigation, David McDonough (W/M, DOB: 6-7-63) was placed under arrest for DUI manslaughter.

VEHICLE 1:  1994 red Ford F150 truck, Colorado tag# 033RTZ.
DRIVER 1:  David Patrick McDonough Jr, W/M, 6-7-63, 420 County Road 339, Pagosa Springs, Colorado, 81147.
DRIVER 1 INJURIES:  McDonough suffered minor injuries in the traffic crash.

VEHICLE 2:  2007 black Triumph motorcycle, Florida tag# 84433P.
DRIVER 2:  Charles Thomas Duffy, W/M, 10-24-64, 1715 SW 4th Place, Cape Coral, Florida, 33991.
DRIVER 2 INJURIES:  Duffy died at Cape Coral Hospital due to injuries suffered in the traffic crash.

SYNOPSIS:

Vehicle 1, a truck, was East on SW Pine Island Road in a turn lane.  Vehicle 2, a motorcycle, was West on SW Pine Island Road in the outside lane.  Vehicle 1 made a left turn to enter into the German American Social Club driveway (2101 SW Pine Island Road) and turned into the path of travel of Vehicle 2.  Vehicle 2 skidded in attempt to avoid Vehicle 1.  The front of Vehicle 2 struck the passenger door of Vehicle 1 (t-bone).  Both vehicles came to rest in the driveway entrance of the business.

The driver of Vehicle 1 suffered minor injuries from glass and refused medical attention.  The driver of Vehicle 2 suffered life threatening injuries and was trauma alerted by ambulance to a local hospital.  Officer A. Satterlee, Officer D. Gray, Forensic Tech Potts, and V.A. Pena responded.  At 5:09 pm, the driver of Vehicle 2 died due to injuries suffered in the traffic crash.

A DUI investigation was conducted on scene and the driver of Vehicle 1 was found to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.  The driver of Vehicle 1 was placed under arrest for DUI Manslaughter and transported to the Cape Coral Police Department where he was booked (and later transported to the Lee County Jail).

The next-of-kin HAS BEEN contacted.  This traffic crash IS alcohol/drug related.  It was determined that the driver of Vehicle 2 was NOT wearing a helmet at the time of the traffic crash.  Due to the investigation, the West lanes of SW Pine Island Road were shut down for several hours.
