Three killed in Shark Key Bridge crash

From Keys News:

Sunday, August 23, 2015

Three people were killed — including a Key West woman — and three others were airlifted to Miami after two trucks collided on U.S. 1 early Sunday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The crash shut down the highway for nearly five hours,

The crash occurred at 12:54 a.m. after a southbound 2009 Ford F-150 pickup struck the guard rail on the Shark Key Bridge at Mile Marker 12, rolled over and came to rest in the northbound lane, where a 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 truck struck it head-on, said FHP Lt. Kathy McKinney said.

Anna Catherine Sommerfeldt, 36, of Key West, the passenger in the Ford, died at Lower Keys Medical Center from her injuries. The driver of the Ford, Daniel Jacob Sommerfeldt, 32, also from Key West, was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center, but his condition was not available late Sunday.

“We don’t know how it happened yet,” McKinney said Sunday as to why the Ford struck the guardrail.

Two passengers in the Dodge, Donald Pollitt, 52, and Brittany Lay, 19, both of Avon Park, were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the Dodge, Natacha Alvarado, 34, of Sebring, and Veronica Pollitt, 43, of Avon Park, were transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, while another passenger, Timothy Smith, 45, of Sebring, was airlifted to Kendall Regional Medical Center in Miami. Their conditions weren’t available Sunday.

The driver of the Dodge, Anthony David Smith, 18, of Sebring, Florida, was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center where he was treated and released. …..MORE
