UPDATE from N.W. Herald
WOODSTOCK – In a packed courtroom on the day before Thanksgiving, Carrie Kilpatrick saw the man who admitted to killing her son sentenced to six months in McHenry County Jail and 30 months of probation.
Justin A. Raven of Wonder Lake pleaded guilty to the amended charge of reckless homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol. On Sept. 9, 2014, authorities have said Raven was intoxicated when he struck 17-year-old Nicholas Kilpatrick of McHenry with his pickup truck.
Nicholas Kilpatrick, who was riding a skateboard when he was hit, died from injuries he sustained in the crash.
“Six months in county jail for taking somebody’s life is a joke,” Carrie Kilpatrick said after the hearing. “It’s a slap on the wrist and a slap in our face. And it’s like saying my son’s life didn’t matter.”
Raven originally pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated driving under the influence. At the hearing Wednesday, a negotiated plea was reached between the two parties, with McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Sharyl Eisenstein representing the state and Mark Facchini representing Raven.
Five members of Nicholas Kilpatrick’s family read victim statements Wednesday, and several people in the audience cried. MORE
