Fatal Crash Investigation results in Felony DUI Charges for Shawn Brautigam

After a three-week investigation, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office has charged Shawn Brautigam with 3 felony counts of Aggravated DUI.  The charges stem from a November 24, 2019 crash which resulted in the death of 34-year-old Woodstock male and serious injury to a 44-year-old Wheaton female.

On November 24, 2019, at 2:03 a.m., the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Woodstock Police, Woodstock Fire/Rescue District, and Wonder Lake Fire/Rescue responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a 2019 Toyota Camry that had overturned after crashing into a utility pole and tree on Charles Road west of Queen Anne Road.

Investigations were conducted in cooperation with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit, Winnebago County Coroner’s Office, and McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office. 

Preliminary investigation revealed Brautigam’s blood alcohol content was above the legal limit at the time of the collision and that Brautigam’s Illinois license had been suspended for a previous DUI offense.  It is also believed that speed may have been a contributing cause to the crash.

Brautigam is currently detained within the DuPage County Jail (IL) on charges unrelated to this incident.

The investigation continues by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit.
