Byron Acosta hit by DWI driver as he walked near a highway.

Terrebonne Parish, LA – One man is dead and another has been charged with vehicular homicide after a vehicle struck a pedestrian in Terrebonne Parish last night.

On Monday, April 17, 2017, shortly before 9 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop C responded to a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 24 near Clendenning Road. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Dodge Caliber driven by 62-year-old Albert Williams Jr. of Montegut was traveling south on LA 24 and drove onto the southbound shoulder, striking a pedestrian. The pedestrian, 43-year-old Byron Acosta of Houma, was struck by the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. The Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office arrived on scene and pronounced Acosta deceased.

Impairment on the part of Williams is suspected to be a factor in this crash. A breath test indicated Williams was over the legal limit for alcohol. Williams was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Williams was charged with vehicular homicide as well as improper lane usage and was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Correctional Center. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorists must be reminded that alcohol has many effects on the body. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter the sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects.
