HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — A man parked on the shoulder of I-196 with a flat tire was killed Saturday afternoon when his vehicle was hit by an alleged drunk driver.
The three-vehicle crash happened in the eastbound lanes shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday between the 63 and 64 milemarkers.
Police say a 2002 Chevy Tahoe, driven by a 46-year-old Holland man, was heading eastbound in the right lane. The driver made a legal pass and then struck a vehicle parked on the shoulder when he moved back into the right lane.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies, the vehicle, a Ford C-Max, was parked well off the shoulder of eastbound I-196 due to a flat tire. Police on scene said the driver had contacted OnStar and was waiting for assistance.
Deputies say 59-year-old Bernard Langmeyer, of Deerfield, was killed in the crash and his wife, Deborah, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injures. Bernard was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash while Deborah was wearing her seatbelt.
According to deputies, the Holland man was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the crash. ….MORE
