Minnesota: Officer soon learned of path of death left by driver he stopped weaving on highway

The blue Mazda was the most smashed-up car the state trooper had ever seen still moving.
And when Sgt. Richard Wegner saw the driver weaving between lanes and floating over onto the shoulder, he pulled him over.
“Might be a dumb question, but what happened to your car?” Wegner asked the man, later identified as 18-year-old Fabrizio Montermini.
Wegner arrested Montermini on suspicion of DWI shortly after 11 p.m. that night, Jan. 13, 2006.
