HELENA – Levi Roope, 28, was arrested Friday night on charges of a felony DUI and two felony charges of tampering with physical evidence.
After a bloody altercation with officers, as many as 14 charges could be filed against him, according to Helena Police Department Sgt. Jayson Zander.
Police officers responded to a 6:25 p.m. call Friday from the corner of Custer and Montana avenues, where a caller reported that a male had almost hit a vehicle at the Cenex gas station and was yelling profanities.
When he left the station, he drove through the Jade Garden parking lot at 3128 N. Montana Ave., reportedly striking two vehicles. A witness followed the driver to the vicinity of Insulator Avenue, where officers caught up with Roope, Zander said.
Roope appeared impaired and officers gave him a field sobriety test and then arrested him for driving under the influence, said Zander.
Roope refused to give a blood sample, so officers applied for and received a search warrant and transported him to St. Peter’s Hospital for the blood test. Roope, whose handcuffs were removed for the blood draw, said Zander, became combative and was able to grab a …MORE
