Las Vegas Metro Police report that on 09/26/2019, at approximately 4:23 a.m., a fatal traffic collision occurred on East Tropicana Avenue at the intersection with South Nellis Boulevard.

Police say that evidence at the scene and witness statements indicated a gray 2008 Nissan Maxima was traveling east on East Tropicana Avenue in the center lane of the 3 eastbound travel lanes, approaching South Nellis Boulevard. A 2013 Freightliner box truck was traveling south on South Nellis Boulevard in the right travel lane of the two southbound lanes.

The Freightliner entered the intersection traveling south as the Nissan Maxima failed to stop for a red traffic signal. The front of the Nissan Maxima collided with the right side steps and fuel tank of the box truck, causing the box truck to rotate counterclockwise and overturn right.

The Nissan Maxima experienced underride during the initial collision with the box truck, causing fatal injuries to the unrestrained driver and critical injuries to the unrestrained front right, and rear left passengers.

The right rear passenger of the Maxima was in use of her seatbelt at the time of the collision and suffered only minor injuries. The driver of the Maxima was determined to be deceased by first responding medical personnel.

The remaining occupants of the Maxima were transported to Sunrise Hospital Trauma for emergency medical intervention. The driver and passenger of the Freightliner were transported to UMC Trauma Hospital for further medical treatment.

At the time of the box truck overturning, a 2013 Nissan Versa was stopped in the left turn lane of northbound South Nellis Boulevard, waiting to turn left onto westbound East Tropicana Avenue.

At the time the box truck overturned it slid in a southeast direction into the front of the Nissan Versa, striking the Versa with the roof of the cab. The Versa was rotated clockwise and pushed south from its initial location.

The restrained driver of the Versa sustained no injuries and remained on the scene.

Police report that impairment is believed to be a factor for the driver of the Maxima.

This collision marks the 78th traffic-related fatality in the LVMPD jurisdiction for 2019. This collision remains under investigation by the LVMPD Collision Investigation Detail.
