At approximately 5:08PM, an officer from the New Mexico State Police conducted a traffic stop on New Mexico State Road 2, north of Dexter, for speeding. The officer made contact with the driver, identified as Michael Quiroz. During conversation with the driver, the officer observed clues that the driver might be under the influence of alcohol. The driver was given Standardized Field Sobriety tests, which indicated he was under the influence.

Mr. Quiroz was placed under arrest and transported to Roswell. Mr. Quiroz submitted to a breath test, which confirmed his breath alcohol content to be at .24, three times the state legal limit.

Mr. Quiroz was charged with Aggravated Driving While Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs (9th offense), Driving on a Revoked Driver’s License and Speeding.

“We will never know the lives we save, but hopefully by taking this intoxicated driver off the road, this Officer prevented a crash that could have taken innocent lives,” said a spokesperson for the State Police.
