ELROY, N.C. — A 12-year-old girl is dead after a fatal drunk driving accident in Wayne County. Now her best friend is coping with her devastating loss.
The accident happened around 9:30 Thursday night at the intersection of Highway 70 and Powell Road.
Troopers say 12-year-old Heather Weir of Goldsboro ran into the middle of the highway, where she was struck by a drunk driver.
She died at a Greenville hospital around 1:50 Friday morning.
“It was horrible. She was only 12. And she didn’t deserve to die,” said Weir’s best friend, Brianna Pollock of Elroy, who witnessed the accident.
“They said she had brain injuries, broken femur, and a broken ankle,” said Pollock.
