DRIVER ARRESTED NEAR PSU AFTER TRAFFIC PURSUIT STARTED IN WASHINGTON

PORTLAND, OREGON (Oct. 13, 2014) — Portland Police report that on Saturday October 11, 2014, at approximately 8:30 p.m., North Precinct and Gang Enforcement Team officers responded to I-5 southbound after the report that the Washington State Patrol was in pursuit of a hit and run suspect from the State of Washington.

Officers were able to follow the pursuit, beginning at the Rose Quarter, across the Marquam Bridge and exiting at Southwest 6th Avenue. A North Precinct officer was able to perform a successful Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver to spin out the suspect vehicle on 6th near Harrison Street.

The driver would not obey officers commands and struggled briefly with them before being taken into custody.

The driver, 61-year-old Joe Edward Abeyta of Cathlamet, Washington, was arrested on charges of Attempt to Elude by Vehicle, Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants/Drugs (DUII), Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangerment, and Interfering with Public Transportation.

Abeyta was booked into the Multnomah County Jail and may face additional charges in the State of Washington.

The MAX line along Southwest 6th Avenue was delayed briefly due to this encounter and arrest.
