Sgt. Thomas Winkis was busted and told he would be fired prior to crashing into van, killing driver and now being charged with DUI

PHILADELPHIA – 2013-09-30 — Hours after he was suspended with intent to dismiss on Friday, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office approved charges against a police officer in connection with a crash in the Holmesburg section that left a man dead.

Sgt. Thomas Winkis faces charges of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle, DUI, involuntary manslaughter and recklessly endangering another person.

Investigators say Winkis was at the wheel of a silver Dodge Challenger when it T-boned a van at 11:40 p.m. Saturday, September 14th at State Road and Ashburner Street in Holmesburg.
