NORTH CHARLESTON, SC  – 2013-08-25 — The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash that occurred late Saturday night on U.S. 17-A near Highway 61 in Dorchester County.

Troopers say the accident happened around 11:40 p.m. after a 2000 Jeep attempted to pass a 2008 Mercury while both vehicles were traveling north on U.S. 17-A. Authorities say the two vehicle made contact with each other and the jeep ran off the road and overturned, ejecting the passenger from the jeep.

The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office say the passenger 21-year-old Amanda Carey of Summerville died at the scene. Investigators say Carey was not wearing a seatbelt and that no one in the Mercury was injured.

Troopers charged 21-year-old Taylor Watkins, the driver of the jeep, with driving under the influence. …more
