From WBFF – SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Charges were upgraded Friday afternoon for the man troopers say caused a series of crashes on Interstate 26 that left an elderly man dead and five others injured.
The Spartanburg County coroner said Donald Ray Bain, 80, of Spartanburg, died as a result of one of the crashes.
The crashes happened around 11 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 29.
Westbound I-26 was shut down for seven hours as troopers investigated.
Troopers said they arrested Scott Simpson, 40, of Inman, and initially charged him with DUI, driving under suspension and leaving the scene of an accident.
Those charges were upgraded to felony DUI with death and leaving the scene of an accident with death.
On Saturday, March 31, 2018, a judge denied bond on the felony DUI with death charge and it was set at $25,000 on the leaving the scene of an accident with death charge, according to the Spartanburg County Detention Center website. MORE
