John Newman felony DUI in death of Peggy Garrett Spartanburg SC

South Carolina Highway Patrol report that John Newman, 43, of Pauline, South Carolina has been charged with felony DUI resulting in death in connection with the fatal crash allegedly caused by him on Dec. 3, 2014 in Spartanburg County, S. C.

According to Lance Corporal Gary Miller, Newman was operating a pickup truck which struck the rear of a vehicle which was stopped in the turning lane on East Blackstock Road at Bradford Drive at approximately 4:15 pm.

Newman’s truck impacted the car and propelled it across the center line of the roadway causing it to be hit head-on by another vehicle. The driver of the car hit by Newman was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead. She was identified as Peggy Garrett, 75, of Moore, S.C.

WHNS Fox Carolina reported that in court, troopers testified on Dec. 4, that Newman was traveling at about 70 mph at the time of the crash, allegedly admitted to troopers that he was using prescription drugs and drinking prior to the horrific incident.

The driver of the third vehicle was injured.  Newman was treated for injuries and appeared at his arraignment in a wheelchair. He was assigned home detention with a $20,000 bond.
