State Senator Paul Campbell busted for DUI, says he’ll pass a law against such arrests; spent the night in the slammer after rear-ending another vehicle

When given a field sobriety test, Sen. Campbell was told by the State Trooper to put his hands down by his sides. He immediately swung both arms up as if to take flight or to balance himself. Just a few minutes prior, he was operating a motor vehicle in heavy traffic.
As the Trooper continued to show Senator Campbell how to perform a walking test, Senator Campbell continued to use his arms for balance to be able to simply stand up straight. Several times he had to step sideways to keep from falling.
When walking nine paces, he often had trouble maintaining his balance and fared worse when asked to hold one leg up and count to three, a feat he couldn’t master.
“You didn’t have to handcuff me,” said Sen. Campbell.
The trooper explained it was policy to do so, and Campbell replied that he understood. During the field sobriety tests, Sen. Campbell was polite to the Trooper and compliant.
While on the way to jail Sen. Campbell and the Trooper exchanged small talk about sports and then Campbell said, “This may cost me my job, you know that.”
“I run the Charleston Airport,” said Sen. Campbell when explaining why he has two wallets.
The trooper was silent. Campbell didn’t say anything about having gratitude for the Trooper’s actions in taking him off the highway before he slammed into a carload of his constituents and killing them as he drove impaired.
Sen. Campbell noted that South Carolina uses the breathalyzer that only two states use.
“We use the one that is easiest to beat in court,” he said with a laugh.
The trooper responded by saying,”That’s why we have a very high fatality rate.”

“This is not fun. This kinda sucks,” Campbell is heard saying in the video while sitting in the police cruiser. “I’m going to change the law on this… I’m not DUI. I wasn’t driving the car anyway.”
