DIRIENZO continued to punch the trooper in the face while trying to disarm him. The trooper managed to defend himself by punching DIRIENZO back who let go of the trooper’s rifle.
Palenik was arrested following his failure to comply that ended with Palenik striking a New York State Police cruiser and then an uninvolved vehicle.
As a result of the initial investigation, Jesse Bennett was arrested and charged with Murder, Assault 2nd Degree, Operating a Motor Vehicle Under in Influence of Alcohol/Drugs 1st Degree (Aggravated), and Open Alcoholic Beverage in Motor Vehicle. He is lodged in the Three Forks Regional Jail.
As Redus apparently came closer, Carter said, “Get back. Get back.”
Then came six gunshots, five of them striking Redus.
The incident ends with the breathless officer calling police dispatch, “Shots fired. Need help. Shots fired. Shots fired. Send EMS.”
