Began in 1998, the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Patrol consists of Tennessee Walking horses coupled with trained Sheriff’s deputies. The program is completely funded with confiscated drug money and donations from the public. The mounted units are used for crowd control at public events, search and rescue, and other special assignments. Officers and horses are put through rigorous training which allows them to handle diverse situations.
